Steve Nelson enters his 3rd season at San Jose City College Track & Field where he leads the effort to build San Jose City College’s program into a national Track & Field powerhouse. Coach Nelson is joined in this effort by a team of some of the most capable, accomplished, and decorated Track & Field coaches in Northern California. His coaching philosophy is grounded in a strong belief in using speed development and weight room training to maximize athletic potential and a dedication to promoting academic and athletic excellence among his students.
Coach Nelson brings over 34+ years of experience training and developing students to maximize their athletic and academic potential. Before San Jose City College, Coach Nelson was the Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at Mt. Pleasant High School in San Jose. During his tenure, Coach Nelson built the high school’s sprints, jumps, and hurdles program into one of the best in Northern California, with a combined dual meet record of 264-88-3. He led Mt. Pleasant High School to 26 Mt. Hamilton Athletic League Titles, 11 Central Coast Section (CCS) titles, and 1 California State championship.
Notably, 54 of his athletes graduated to compete at four year universities on full or partial scholarships. In addition to obtaining numerous league, CCS, and state championships, 5 of Coach Nelson’s athletes competed for Team USA at either the World or Pan American Junior championships, and 2 of his athletes became Olympians.
Coach Nelson graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and a Master’s degree in Education.
