San Mateo Overwhelms San José City 52–7 Behind Explosive Special Teams

College of San Mateo showed why it remains one of the top programs in California Community College football, piling up 475 yards of offense and scoring in all four quarters to beat San José City College 52–7 on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Stadium.

The Bulldogs (8–1, 3–1 National Bay 6) opened with three touchdowns in the first nine minutes, using a balanced attack and a devastating special teams effort to hand the Jaguars (1–8, 0–4) their sixth straight loss.

After San Mateo's Corey Leaupepe caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Alexander on the opening drive, the Jaguars briefly answered with their lone highlight of the day — a spectacular 71-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Cedeno Chavez just 48 seconds later. Kicker Jineen Laimon, the first woman to score in program history, added the extra point to tie the game 7–7.

But that momentum was short-lived. San Mateo responded immediately when Dominick Gonzalez broke free for a 36-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a 1-yard plunge from Bruce Uperesa to make it 21–7 after one quarter.

From there, the Bulldogs' special teams took over. Sophomore returner Trevon Watson scored twice on punt returns — from 94 and 58 yards — to blow the game open by halftime, 35–7. San Mateo's defense and coverage units continually pinned San José deep, forcing 11 Jaguar punts and holding them to just 205 total yards.

Quarterback Luke Alexander finished 7 of 15 for 149 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yard strike to Jalen Arnold in the third quarter. The Bulldogs piled up 318 rushing yards, led by Gonzalez with 107 on just eight carries and Josh Tucker, who added a 49-yard scoring run early in the fourth.

San Mateo kicker Dieter Kelly closed the scoring with a 34-yard field goal midway through the final period. He was 6-for-6 on extra points and added nine total points.

For San José City, Chavez was again the offensive spark, rushing for 110 yards on 11 carries but completing just five passes for 37 yards. The Jaguars' defense was led by Oliver Lyssand and Junaid Khan, each with seven tackles, while Isaiah Barrett and Shamar Matthews recorded interceptions to prevent further damage.

The Bulldogs converted 45 percent of their third downs and averaged 9.0 yards per play, compared with just 3.2 for the Jaguars. San José was limited to 68 passing yards across three quarterbacks and failed to score in the final three quarters.

San José City will close out its home schedule next Saturday when it visits Foothill College.
