Balanced San José City effort holds off Chabot, 80-73 at Percy Carr Gym
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Taj Royster delivered a dominant inside performance, and San José City College held off a late push to beat Chabot College 80-73 on Wednesday night at Percy Carr Gym.
Royster finished with a game-high 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting and controlled the glass with 14 rebounds as the Jaguars improved their home form in front of the SJCC crowd. San José led 38-30 at halftime and matched Chabot basket for basket after the break to secure the nonconference win.
Muhammad Singleton added 15 points and five rebounds, while Dylan Galvan chipped in 14 points and a team-high seven assists. Jeremiah Butler scored 12 points, and Ryan Baker contributed nine for the Jaguars, who shot 46.2% from the field.
San José leaned on its interior play early, with Royster scoring efficiently around the rim and drawing defensive attention that opened passing lanes. The Jaguars built an eight-point halftime cushion behind strong rebounding and second-chance opportunities, finishing with an 18-23 edge on the offensive glass.
Chabot made its push in the second half, outscoring San José 43-42 after intermission and trimming the margin to single digits in the final minutes. But the Jaguars answered at the free-throw line and on the boards to keep the visitors at bay. San José went 16 of 25 from the stripe and limited mistakes down the stretch, committing nine turnovers overall.
Savion Daniels provided a spark off the bench with five points, while Armon Naweed added a timely 3-pointer as part of San José's balanced rotation.
The win keeps the Jaguars rolling as they continue their December slate. San José will look to carry the momentum into conference play.
