Jaguars Fall to Santa Rosa in Doubleheader Nightcap, 8-5
SANTA ROSA, Calif. — San José City College rallied twice but couldn't overcome a dominant middle-inning surge by Santa Rosa, falling 8-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Santa Rosa.
The Bear Cubs scored six unanswered runs across the third and fourth innings to take control after the Jaguars had briefly grabbed a 3-2 lead, handing San José its second loss of the afternoon.
Santa Rosa wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the first inning. Kylee Bauman reached and scored on a Mira Olvera single, and Angel Amesa followed with an RBI single to left that was aided by a left field error, making it 2-0.
San José answered in the third. Izzy Gutierrez reached and scored on a DJ Martínez RBI double to center, and Makenna Sieling then laced a two-run double to left-center that scored Martínez and Jaelynn Corona, giving the Jaguars a 3-2 advantage.
The lead was short-lived. Santa Rosa erupted for three runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Kaihla Jarvinen and an RBI single by Niueni Elisara, putting the Bear Cubs back in front 5-3.
The fourth inning proved the knockout blow. Amesa drove in a run with a single, then scored on a Brook Myhre wild pitch, and Brianna Allen added an RBI single to push the Santa Rosa lead to 8-3.
San José made things interesting in the fifth, as Corona doubled home Arianna Vergara and Sieling singled in Corona to cut the deficit to 8-5. But the Jaguars could not add to the total in the final two frames.
Corona and Sieling paced the San José offense. Corona went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Sieling finished 1-for-3 with three RBI. Martínez contributed a double and an RBI out of the catcher's spot.
Amesa led Santa Rosa, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jarvinen added a double and two RBI, and Ava Raines and Mia Avila each chipped in hits and runs scored.
Morgan Pike took the loss for San José, allowing eight runs — six earned — on 12 hits over 3⅔ innings, with a wild pitch factoring into the damage. Alia Casarez threw the final 2⅓ innings in relief. Gia Hernandez earned the win for Santa Rosa, working 4⅓ innings before giving way to Myhre and Mya Gonzalez. San José finished with two errors, both attributed to Gutierrez.
