Merced completes doubleheader sweep of San José City College with 6-2 victory
MERCED — Lexyss Sabin threw a complete game and drove in two runs as Merced College completed a doubleheader sweep of San José City College with a 6-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Merced College.
Sabin (2-4) went all seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three to earn the win.
Merced (8-10-1, 1-0) jumped on top in the first inning when Haiden Priddell singled to center field, scoring Mariana Oberti and Lacie Nycum to put the Vikings ahead 2-1. Sabin followed with an RBI single of her own, plating Maisen Priddell to make it 3-1.
San José (6-13, 0-1) had taken a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Merced error that scored Jaelynn Corona, but the Jaguars could not hold it.
The Jaguars pulled within one in the fourth when Ciara Donahoe singled to center field to score Chevelle Quistian, making it 3-2. But Merced put it away with a three-run fifth inning. Jazmyne Brown singled to right field, scoring Haiden Priddell and Maisen Priddell, before Sabin came through again with an RBI single to center field that capped the scoring at 6-2.
Haiden Priddell finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Brown added two RBI for Merced. Maisen Priddell scored twice.
San José's Makenna Sieling started and allowed three runs in 3⅓ innings. Alia Casarez (0-1) took the loss in relief, giving up three runs — including three hit batters — in just one inning. Morgan Pike finished out the game, tossing 1⅔ scoreless innings.
Corona went 1-for-4 with a run scored to lead San José offensively. The Jaguars were hurt by three errors in the field.
With the sweep, Merced improves to 1-0 in conference play while San José falls to 0-1.
