Byrd’s Double-Double, Stifling Defense Carry San José City College Past Mission, 70–52
SAN JOSE — San José City College leaned on its defense and control of the boards to pull away from Mission in a 70–52 women's basketball victory Wednesday night.
The Jaguars set the tone early with an 18–11 first quarter and took a slim 33–32 lead into halftime before asserting themselves after the break. San Jose outscored Mission 19–15 in the third quarter and closed the game with an 18–5 run in the fourth to secure the win.
Synise Byrd led the Jaguars with 20 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double while anchoring the defense. Hayley Johnson added 15 points, six rebounds, and two blocks, and Kaydin Meyer posted 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as San Jose dominated the glass 50–30.
Daven Woodham filled the stat sheet with seven assists, seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, while Ember Navarro contributed nine points and seven rebounds. Off the bench, Luciana Ortiz provided a spark with six points, five assists and two 3-pointers.
Mission was led by Alyssa Lopez, who scored 15 points on five 3-pointers, and Gabbie Gerrodette, who added 12 points and four steals. The Rams struggled offensively down the stretch, shooting 30.8 percent from the field and managing just five points in the final quarter.
San Jose forced 16 turnovers and held Mission under 31 percent shooting for the game, turning defense and rebounding into steady offense as the Jaguars continued to build momentum in conference play.
