Balanced Attack, Stifling Defense Power San Jose Past Skyline, 87–48
SAN JOSE — San José City College put together its most complete performance of the season Wednesday night, using balanced scoring and relentless defense to roll past Skyline 87–48 in women's basketball action.
The Jaguars took control early, jumping out to a 21–14 first-quarter lead and steadily widening the gap each period. San Jose led 47–35 at halftime, then slammed the door after the break by holding Skyline to just 13 points over the final two quarters.
Synise Byrd paced the Jaguars with 27 points, knocking down three 3-pointers and going a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. Hayley Johnson followed with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, while Kaydin Meyer recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
San Jose's depth was on full display, as the Jaguars shot 51.5 percent from the field, dished out 26 assists and dominated the glass 51–23. The defense forced 20 turnovers and limited Skyline to 26.6 percent shooting.
Ember Navarro added eight points and six assists, and Daven Woodham chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Off the bench, Serenity McCoy provided a spark with four points, and Luciana Ortiz contributed three points and a game-high seven assists.
Skyline was led by Jahzara Pratt and Niesha Ramirez with 11 points apiece, but the Trojans struggled to find a rhythm against San Jose's pressure, shooting just 28 percent from three-point range and committing 20 turnovers.
San Jose continued to build momentum in conference play, turning defense into offense and showcasing its ability to control games on both ends of the floor.
