Byrd, Johnson Are Running the Coast-South — And the Numbers Prove It
SAN JOSE, Calif. — San José City College has established itself as a statistical powerhouse in the Coast Conference South Division this season, with multiple players from the women's basketball program ranking among the league's top individual performers.
Guard Synis Byrd has been the most decorated player in the women's conference, leading the Coast-South in three separate categories. Through 27 games, Byrd paces the division in scoring at 20.6 points per game, three-point shooting percentage at 38.5 percent and free throw percentage at 76.7 percent. She is also tied for first in steals with 75 and ranks fifth in assists with 97 — making her one of the most complete players in the conference.
Byrd's backcourt counterpart, Hayley Johnson, has been equally dominant in her own right. Johnson leads the Coast-South in field goal percentage at an impressive 60.2 percent and tops the division in blocked shots with 51 rejections through 25 games. She ranks second in scoring at 19.8 points per game and fourth in both rebounding (8.1 per game) and free throw percentage (62.8 percent), giving the Jaguars a lethal one-two punch on the perimeter and in the post.
Forward Kaydin Meyer rounds out San José City College's frontcourt presence, ranking second in field goal percentage at 56.2 percent and fifth in rebounding at 7.9 boards per game through 27 contests. Meyer also appears fifth in the blocks category with 16.
The Jaguars' contributions extend beyond their top scorers. Guard Daven Woodham is tied with Byrd for the conference lead in steals with 75 through 27 games, and point guard Luciana Ortiz ranks third in assists with 109 through 27 contests, underscoring San José City's depth and balanced attack.
The strong individual performances have translated into team success as well. San José City College finished the regular season as co-champions of the Coast Conference South Division alongside Hartnell College. The Jaguars will look to carry that momentum into the postseason, hosting Cosumnes River College tonight in Percy Carr Gymnasium in the first round of the regional playoffs.
