Jaguars Take Two of Three at Percy Carr Gym in Early-Season Showcase
San José City College delivered a strong weekend of women's basketball at the Percy Carr Gym, earning wins over Lassen and LA Southwest before falling in a physical championship matchup against Butte. Across three days, the Jaguars showcased balanced scoring, dominant rebounding, and the emergence of several reliable offensive leaders.
Game 1 — San Jose 65, Lassen 48 (Nov. 20)
SJCC opened the tournament with a wire-to-wire victory built on pressure defense and a powerful inside presence. The Jaguars outscored Lassen in every quarter, using a 21–17 first-period burst to set the tone.
Synis Byrd powered the offense with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists on 10-for-21 shooting. Hayley Johnson added 18 points and 6 rebounds, attacking the mid-range with efficiency (8-for-14).
Kaydin Meyer delivered one of her sharpest outings of the weekend, finishing 8 points on 4-for-5 shooting while matching Johnson and Byrd with 6 boards each.
SJCC controlled the glass with 34 rebounds and forced 17 Lassen turnovers to secure a 65–48 win. Lassen never recovered after scoring just nine points in both the second and fourth quarters.
Game 2 — San Jose 62, LA Southwest 49 (Nov. 21)
Day two brought a tougher challenge, but the Jaguars responded with a strong middle-game surge, outscoring LA Southwest 21–10 in the second quarter and 18–14 in the fourth.
Johnson continued her dominant weekend, posting 16 points, 6 rebounds, 8 steals, and 2 blocks on 7-for-9 shooting. Byrd followed with another well-rounded performance: 16 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals.
Meyer was a force on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds to go with 12 points for a steady double-double, while Daven Woodham controlled tempo with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
LA Southwest kept the game close behind two 20-point scorers, but SJCC's 46.4% shooting and 43–27 rebounding advantage proved too much over 40 minutes.
With the win, San Jose improved to 2–0 in the tournament.
Game 3 — Butte 66, San Jose 57 (Nov. 22)
In Saturday's finale, the Jaguars ran into a red-hot Butte squad that hit 12 three-pointers and leaned on long-range shooting to pull away late.
Johnson capped her outstanding tournament with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 10-for-17 shooting—her third straight game as SJCC's leading scorer. Byrd added 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, keeping San Jose within striking distance throughout.
Despite a 22–15 opening quarter advantage, the Jaguars were outscored 39–25 over the middle periods. Butte's depth from the perimeter (12-for-47 from three) overcame SJCC's strong efficiency (50% from the field).
Meyer worked the glass again with 8 rebounds, while Navarro chipped in 4 points and 4 assists.
SJCC shot an efficient 50%, but Butte's 18 assists and timely threes proved decisive.
