The San José City College Jaguars showed flashes of their offensive potential but couldn't overcome Compton College's second-half surge, falling 87–75 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at Percy Carr Gym.
The Jaguars, playing in front of a lively home crowd, trailed 35–27 at halftime after struggling to find rhythm against Compton's aggressive man-to-man defense. Despite a strong scoring push led by sophomore guard Langston Boyd, who poured in 20 points on 9-for-19 shooting, SJCC couldn't contain Compton's transition attack and depth in the second half.
Compton (1–0) opened the final 20 minutes with a 10–2 run fueled by perimeter shooting and quick ball movement that forced the Jaguars into early foul trouble. The Tartars' inside-out play stretched San José's defense thin, extending their lead to double digits midway through the second half.
San José City (0–1) found energy off the bench from Dylan Galvan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including two three-pointers, and hit all five of his free throws to finish with 13 points. His steady presence helped the Jaguars close the gap to 68–60 with six minutes left, but turnovers and missed free throws down the stretch sealed their fate.
The Jaguars shot 42.2% from the field, including 41.2% from beyond the arc, but struggled at the line, converting just 58.3% (14-of-24). The missed opportunities at the stripe loomed large as Compton capitalized on nearly every SJCC miscue, turning 18 Jaguar turnovers into fast-break points.
Sophomore forward Savion Daniels added 13 points and six rebounds, showing balance on both ends, while Jeremiah Butler contributed eight points, seven boards, and three assists. Guard Ryan Baker chipped in six points and a team-high three assists, and Taj Royster added six off the bench.
Compton outscored San José 52–48 in the second half, pulling away late with their size advantage and consistent execution. A late technical foul on SJCC guard Muhammad Singleton symbolized the team's mounting frustration as the Tartars maintained composure to close out the win.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Devin Aye's squad showed promising chemistry and hustle — qualities that will be key as the Jaguars navigate their early nonconference schedule.
San José City will look to rebound next week when they host The San Jose City Tipoff (Nov. 6-8), aiming to tighten up their defense and convert at a higher clip from the free-throw line.
The Jaguars may not have secured the win, but they reminded fans that this young roster has the athleticism and fight to make noise as the season unfolds.
