Cabrillo 4, San José 2 — Seahawks capitalize late to edge Jaguars despite Martinez blast
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Cabrillo pieced together timely hits and took advantage of an early San José miscue, then added insurance late to slip past San José City College, 4–2, on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks (1–0) scored in four different innings and leaned on a steady six-inning start from Danielle Keller, who scattered three hits and allowed two runs while striking out one to earn the win. Makayla Ogan worked a scoreless seventh despite issuing three walks to secure the save.
San José had its best swing in the fourth when catcher DJ Martinez turned on a pitch and drove it out for a two-run homer, tying the game at 2–2 and briefly energizing the home dugout. The blast scored Chevelle Quistian, who had reached on a single.
But Cabrillo answered.
Ariyah Morgan, who finished with two hits, broke the tie earlier with a solo homer in the fourth and later set up the go-ahead run in the sixth. After Morgan reached and advanced, Bailey Fulton lined an RBI single to left to make it 3–2. In the seventh, Grace Stryker added breathing room with a run-scoring single that plated Renee Parker.
Stryker went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Fulton drove in two runs on a pair of hits. Parker chipped in two hits and a stolen base as Cabrillo totaled nine hits.
San José managed just three hits but stayed within striking distance thanks to patience at the plate, drawing five walks. Belle Walker doubled, and Martinez accounted for both Jaguar runs with her homer. The Jaguars stranded seven runners.
Maya Medina kept San José close early, allowing two runs, one earned, over three innings. Priyah Quinonez took the loss, giving up two runs across four innings of relief.
Cabrillo opened the scoring in the first when Fulton reached on an error at first base, allowing Charileen Pauneto to score. The unearned run set the tone for a game that ultimately hinged on small margins.
San José threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but Ogan induced soft contact to end it.
By the numbers: Cabrillo 9 hits, 0 errors. San José 3 hits, 1 error.
