Jaguars Explode for 10 Runs to Earn Split With 10–1 Rout of Cosumnes River
SAN JOSE, Calif. — After letting Game 1 slip away, San José City College wasted no time responding.
The Jaguars broke open a tight contest with a six-run third inning and rolled past Cosumnes River College 10–1 in five innings Thursday to earn a split of the doubleheader.
Cosumnes River scratched across a run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Nina Najafizadeh, but that would be the Hawks' only hit — and only run — of the game.
San José answered emphatically in the bottom of the third.
The Jaguars sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting. Makenna Sieling tied the game with an RBI single, Chevelle Quistian followed with a run-scoring hit, and Jaelynn Corona added another RBI single. DJ Martinez delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run single to center, giving the Jaguars a 6–1 lead.
The offense wasn't finished.
In the fifth, Martinez drove in another run with a groundout before Shelby Apostolo launched a three-run home run to left, putting the game out of reach at 10–1.
Apostolo finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Martinez drove in three runs of her own. Corona and Quistian each collected two hits, and the Jaguars totaled 10 hits in the run-rule victory.
Sieling was dominant in the circle. The sophomore right-hander allowed just one hit over five innings, striking out two and walking three to earn her first win of the season. She faced just 18 batters and never allowed Cosumnes River to mount a serious threat after the second inning.
San José capitalized on two Hawks errors and applied consistent pressure on the basepaths, while the defense backed Sieling with steady play behind her.
After falling 8–3 in the opener, the Jaguars responded with one of their most complete performances of the season, using timely hitting and a strong pitching effort to secure the split and carry momentum forward.
