SAN MATEO, Calif. — Hayley Johnson and Synise Byrd powered a suffocating defensive effort as San José City College cruised to a 72–35 victory over San Mateo College on Wednesday evening.
San José set the tone from the opening tip, racing to a 19–11 first-quarter lead and holding San Mateo to just four points in the second quarter. The Jaguars carried a 34–15 advantage into halftime and never let up, outscoring the hosts in every quarter.
Byrd led all scorers with 21 points, adding seven rebounds and five steals, while Johnson finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Daven Woodham orchestrated the offense with eight assists to go along with 10 points, and Kaydin Meyer contributed eight points, nine rebounds and three steals.
San José shot 47.7 percent from the field and forced 25 turnovers, holding San Mateo to 20.9 percent shooting and just 1 of 19 from 3-point range.
San Mateo was led by Bree Hodge and Ravyn Martin with six points apiece, but the Bulldogs struggled throughout against the Jaguars' pressure defense.
