Jaguars Outlast Porterville in Second Game of Doubleheader
SAN JOSE — DJ Martinez homered, doubled, and drove in four runs to lead San Jose City College to a 7-6 victory over Porterville College in the second game of a doubleheader.
Martinez, who finished 3-for-4, put the Jaguars on the board in the third inning with a two-run home run that scored Jaelynn Corona and pulled San Jose within one. Later in the inning, Angelina Castro doubled to center field to score Izzy Gutierrez and tie the game at three.
San Jose took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a rally that began with Martinez doubling home Corona to knot the score at four. Belle Walker then laced a run-scoring triple to put the Jaguars ahead, and Castro followed with a single to score Walker and push the lead to 6-4. Martinez added another RBI single in the fifth to extend the advantage to 7-4.
Porterville had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Crisslyn Rodriguez doubled to right field, driving in Cerinity Perez and Priscilla Mata-Suarez. Morgynn Wylie then singled and advanced to second on a left-field error, scoring Rodriguez to make it 3-0.
The Eagles threatened in the fourth when Elli John doubled home Wylie to cut the deficit to 4-3, and Wylie gave Porterville fans hope in the sixth with a two-run home run that brought the Eagles within one at 6-7. But San José could not be caught.
Priyah Quinonez earned the win, improving to 5-4, after relieving starter Alia Casarez in the second inning. Quinonez tossed 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs — two earned — with two walks and two strikeouts. Morgan Pike closed out the final inning without allowing a run.
Alexandrea Andrighetto took the loss for Porterville, surrendering six runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Klarissa Manrriquez pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief.
